Background
Released in 1982, this track was Nena's commercial breakthrough and remains a definitive anthem of the Neue Deutsche Welle (NDW) movement.
Neue Deutsche Welle Context
The song characterizes the NDW era by blending New Wave synth sounds with direct, emotionally raw German lyrics, moving away from the previously dominant English-language rock.
Breakout Success
Nena's performance of this song on the television program Musikladen in August 1982 led to an immediate surge in popularity, propelling the single to number two on the German charts.
Lyrical Directness
The lyrics use accessible but evocative language to describe the intense disorientation and physical sensations of teenage longing and infatuation.
